Why It Matters

Encountering 404 error pages frustrates site visitors and interrupts conversion paths. A handful of broken links won’t hurt your rankings directly, but dead internal links waste crawl budget and stop ranking equity flowing through your site, and broken backlinks throw away links other sites gave you.

  1. Regular Site Crawls: Crawl your website periodically using site audit tools or monitor Google Search Console's "Page Indexing" report to identify dead URLs.

  2. Update Internal Links: Modify internal anchor text links pointing to missing pages so they point directly to live, relevant content URLs.

  3. Implement Server-Side 301 Redirects: Configure permanent 301 redirects for moved or deleted resources to pass backlink equity and prevent user drop-off.
