Why It Matters

Outdated plugins and themes represent the primary entry vector for automated WordPress hacks and backdoor installations. Regular auditing keeps your attack surface minimal.

  • Remove Unmaintained Components: Delete inactive, unmaintained, or abandoned plugins and themes immediately.

  • Automated Vulnerability Scans: Integrate vulnerability scanning security tools (WPScan, Wordfence) to receive automated CVE vulnerability alerts.

  • Maintain Lean Plugin Architecture: Keep total active plugin counts lean, choosing reputable, frequently updated tools.

  • Virtual Patching & WAF Rules: Deploy web application firewalls capable of virtual patching to protect unpatched plugins prior to official vendor security release fixes.

Prioritize by Severity

When several updates are waiting, patch first anything with an actively exploited or critical vulnerability, and anything that can be reached without logging in. If a fix isn’t available yet, deactivate the plugin until it is, or rely on WAF virtual patching in the meantime.
