Why It Matters
Losing a domain due to expired billing details destroys brand identity and organic search authority accumulated over years. Expired domains can be snatched by domain auction brokers or malicious actors instantly.
Enable Auto-Renewal: Enable registrar auto-renewal with multiple backup credit card payment methods on file.
Update Administrative Contact Emails: Maintain active, monitored WHOIS administrative contact email addresses.
Registrar Transfer Locks: Enable Registrar Domain Transfer Lock (clientTransferProhibited) to prevent unauthorized domain transfers.
Multi-Year Registration: Register core brand domains for multi-year periods (3–10 years) to reduce the risk of an accidental lapse. (Google has said registration length isn’t a ranking factor.)
Secure the Registrar Account
Turn on two-factor authentication at your registrar and limit who can log in. A hijacked registrar account lets an attacker redirect your website and email or transfer the domain away, even when auto-renewal is on.
